Saving water is not only essential for our economy, but also for a reasonable consumption of the earth's goods. In order for us to be more aware of the relevance of having viability to such an essential service as drinking water, it is not superfluous to know that 723 million people still do not have access to it.
About 130 litres of water is what we waste in Spain for domestic consumption, per resident per day. Let's see how to reduce it by varying some gadgets and certain customs.
- Turn off the tap whenever you don't use it, even if you think it's for a minimum time: while we put soap in our hair, we brush our teeth, when we scrub the pots in the kitchen, when we shave...
- Replace the bathroom with a quick shower of just a few minutes. In this simple way we will even save 3600 litres per month or 50% on our bill.
- Put an efficient shower head in the shower to limit the water flow without varying the pressure. Thus achieving considerable savings.
- Every time we use the toilet tank we waste 8 to 10 litres of water...sometimes, just to throw away some paper. Put a trash can in the toilet and use it. Remember that the toilet is NOT a wastebasket
- Recycle the water you don't use for watering or for later use in the kitchen. This moderation is mainly oriented to the water that we waste while the hot water comes out.
- The most correct way to defrost food is to leave it in the refrigerator and not to put it under the water tap.
- Use the appliances in the most efficient way. Make sure that the load is always full. If not, use the appropriate programs for this, such as short cycles or medium charging. In this way we experience a saving of 2600 to 2900 litres every month.
The efficiency of household appliances is regulated by the EU. If you are buying new ones, always opt for those with the A+++ label
- Dripping taps can wear out 11,000 litres of water a year. It is essential to carry out regular checks on them and repair any leaks.
- If you have a garden, choose to water your plants in the morning or when it's getting dark , since this way you avoid water vaporization.
- Water savers: They are from the minute zero, the simplest and easiest prevention as well as effective in saving water. It is a universal filter adjustable to all taps, where its main function is to reduce the flow of water.
Water is a precious and scarce commodity and it should be the commitment of all to use it sensibly and responsibly.
Carrying out these basic recommendations will not only help us to vary our habits and dispositions to favour considerable savings in the bill of each month, but we will also get used to being more sustainable and efficient with such an important resource as water.
